on the use of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L as anti-corrosion coating (one-layer only) for diluted waste acid tank ship LRG 268

| Hagen Krebs |
H.Krebs is an expert on corrosion protection. He has an extensive professional experience of over a decade regarding heavy duty rust and corrosion protection. The shipowner VTG-Lehnkering AG of Duisburg is one of the major companies of the european inland shipping industry.
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L is a superior, easy to use corrosion protection for steel structures, especially for those exposed to high dynamic stress and heavy attack by diluted waste acid . This report is on an actual successful corrosion protection effected on inland ships:

This highly corrosive cargo causes material damage not only to the steel walls of the tank in the hull, but also to the loading equipment, cargo lids and auxiliary motors . Time consuming and especially troublesome is the necessity to entirely interrupt any work activity during each repair even for a single part. Each recoating job requires stopping of the normal operation for days . |

| Basic-Causes |
Steel constructions in the field of the shipping industry are exposed to high dynamic stress, thus causing microfissures in conventional multi-layer protective coatings. Since the ships are all year round in the water, this protective coating is constantly exposed to the changing climate from warm to below freezing.
Practically speaking in order for the layered coating to be absolutely "tight" the product of the dynamic elasticity module of each layer (top coat Ed , intermediate coat Ez , base coat Eu and steel plate Es ) and its corresponding thermal coefficient of expansion alpha(d,z,u,s) should have about the same numerical value in each layer : Ed alpha(d) approx. equal Ez alpha(z) approx. equal Eu alpha(u) approx. equal Es alpha(s) The three dynamic elasticity modules Ed , Ez und Eu however are subject - like all elastoplastic materials - to varying temperature/time superpositions . The formation of areas of internal stress between the coating layers and this stress build-up will - after a certain length of service time- lead automatically to the above mentioned microfissures .
|
|
| Composite System |
Whenever mechanical stress within a coating is evenly distributed by means of oriented fiber-or tissue-forming reinforcements we call this a composite system . This is the unique formula of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L as indicated in its name Composite Anti Rust Organic Liner.
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L can be applied as base-coat , as a intermediate coating or as top coat . Thus EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L performs as a true single- coat ( three in one !) Since EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L as a compound does not crack during frost and at the same time is heat-resistant, this product is highly suitable for use on board a ship, especially since the application can be effected without work-stoppage and at a minimum of time. |

| Range of use |
Picture 1 clearly demonstrates the applications on LRG 268 of a single-layer of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L. as anti-corrosion protection specificly on steel surfaces exposed to diluted waste acid during transport and loading. Edge-and corner treatments - normally very time consuming - were done with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L. problem free. This compound cures stressfree and can therefore be applied at any wanted thickness Picture 2 .
A large range of motors, pipes, flanges, necks, expansion bellows on pumps, metering- and probing lines can be rust-protected with a single one-coating process Picture 3 .

| Satisfactory results with use of EVERLAST®CAROL |
Practical experience confirms that EVERLAST ® C.A.R.O.L. protects the critical areas in the acid tank, is a mangeable product, looks good and provides easy maintenance. Pictures 4 , Pictures 5 ,Pictures 6 .
The shipowner therefore has started to coat the acid tanks of more of his ships with EVERLAST® C.A.R.O.L.

| Coating with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O,L |
No special preparation procedures are necessary when EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L is applied. The compound has a sufficient long pot-life and flows easily to all cornes and flute sections.
It is impressive that with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L. a coating thickness from 150 µ to 1500 µ can be applied in one single operation without any fissure formation or shrinkage problems. |

|
|
||
| Performance | EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L - makes it possible to create a wear-, weather- and chemical resistant anti-rust protection-layer on easy-weldable ordinary carbon steel. This gives the maintenance engineer additional freedom of design and "great stainless-steel looks" for his equipment, cargo holds and infrastructures for many years of service, thus maintaining the ship´s value. | |
