1.Scope of investigation
The Institute for Corrosion Protection Dresden was commissioned, to examine the single-coat "EVERLAST®.C.A.R.O.L" as per DIN EN ISO 12944 (The Norm for heavy duty corrosion protection) . The very agressive conditions of this Norm are used to test multi-layer anticorrosion coatings designed for long term protection of steel.
Testing the ability of EVERLAST®.C.A.R.O.L to withstand these severe corrosion conditions is highly desirable because of the tremendous advantages in saving of labor and cost which could be achieved with EVERLAST®CAROL's usage. The high temperature resistance of the EVERLAST®.C.A.R.O.L and its failproof application in conjunction with the use of FIX-IT is a further advantage.

2.Tests performed and their results
The testing plates (steel plates degree of derusting Sa 2 1/2 as well as zinc-plated steel pieces cleaned by "Sweepen" ) were coated with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L in accordance with the directions of use. Dry film thickness was 246 ± 28µm .
First a thin film ( approx. 1 µm ) of the bonding agent FIX-IT was applied to the steel plate and ( after 30 minutes waiting time ) then this bond layer was coated with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L. using a doctor blade. The samples were left to age for 21 days and were then subject to the individual tests.

2.1 Anti-rust test perfomed under salt spray exposure 1440 hrs as per ISO 7253
Testing of multiple layer corrosion protection coatings as per DIN EN ISO 12499 requires in Part 6 of that norm a salt spray test as per ISO 7253. The testing plates are mounted in a salt spray testing chamber and for 1440 hrs are under the attack of a spray of a 5% sodium chloride solution which has a temperature of 35 degrees celsius.
Bond strenght of the coating as per DIN EN 24 624( Sandwich-Method): The surface fracture pictures have the following meaning:
Table 1: Test results after 1440 hrs salt spray exposure of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L coated steel plates :
Because of the anisotropic composite-structure of the EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L coating , cross cut tests as per EN ISO 2409 result in values of 0/1 at the interface steel/coating and may be 2 at the interface: coating/test-tool. The excellent performance of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L coated steel plates in the salt spray testing chamber (1440 hrs) shows Picture 1

2.2 Anti-rust test perfomed under condensing water vapour conditions 720 hrs as per ISO 6270
Testing of multiple layer corrosion protection coatings as per DIN EN ISO 12499 requires in Part 6 of that norm that coated steel plates are tested under the attack of condensing water vapour.
The test duration is 720 hrs and the water vapour has a temperature of 35 degrees celsius. The back side of the test plate is kept at ambient (laboratory) temperature thereby forming a temperature gradient and causing the water vapour to condense. Bond strenght of the coating as per DIN EN 24 624( Sandwich-Method): The surface fracture pictures have the following meaning:

2.3 Anti-rust test perfomed under condensing water vapour conditions plus Sulphur Dioxide as per ISO 3231
Testing of multiple layer corrosion protection coatings as per DIN EN ISO 12499 requires in Part 6 of that norm that coated steel plates are tested under the combined attack of condensing water vapour plus of sulphur dioxide as per ISO 3231 (0,2 S). The total test requires 30 cycles . Each cycle consists of 8 hours exposure to condensing water vapour of 35 degrees celsius temperature followed by 16 hours of rest at ambient temperature without water vapour exposure. The water contains 0,067% by weight of sulphur dioxide.
Bond strenght of the coating as per DIN EN 24 624( Sandwich-Method): The surface fracture pictures have the following meaning:

2.4 Anti-rust test perfomed under condensing water vapour conditions 720 hrs as per ISO 6270 (zinc-plated steel)
Testing of multiple layer corrosion protection coatings as per DIN EN ISO 12499 requires in Part 6 of that norm that coated zinc-plated steel test pieces are tested under the attack of condensing water vapour as per ISO 6270 C5-M.
The test duration is 720 hours and the water vapour has a temperature of 35 degrees celsius. The back side of the test plate is kept at ambient (laboratory) temperature thereby forming a temperature gradient and causing the water vapour to condense.
