Two identical, rusted , outdoor steel-structures have to be
protected. Contractors are Johnny "X" and Johnny "Smart".
A Tale Of Two Anti-Rust Conservation Jobs
The mess that we
know!
Here we have Contractor Johnny"X" using PRODUCT"WX". What is he
doing? Waiting for a warm day and the sun to come out.
Maybe Summer ?
O.K. he applies the first coat (1 to 2 mil thickness ). keeping busy

with that propane gun to dry out wet nests on the steel structure.
Gee , twice he almost catches fire himself due to this dangerous
operation.
That done he has to wait three days , comes back to the site , sand

the dried first coat and then apply the second coat of PRODUCT"WX".
Problem is, it rained yesterday. The first PRODUCT"WX"-coat is still

damp and wet. Has to wait two more days, and then come back again
so he can sand the first layer of PRODUCT"WX". This sanding
operation was only 85% sucessfull (his helper was a little bit sloppy
on some areas of the steel structure. these non-sanded areas will
look pretty bad after only one year in service.)

After applying the second coat of 1-2 mil PRODUCT"WX" Johnny"X"
has to come back to the site a third and forth time to sand and to
finally apply the top coat.

So, now all is done, but what a production it was. The plant manager -
you can´t even talk to him. He IS furious. all that expense of labour,
not to mention that the plant had to be shut down for almost 2 weeks.

Final analysis :

Cost of material 16%, cost of labour 70 %. net profit 14%.

 

 

CAUSES for the
Johnny"X"
troubles:
PRODUCT"WX" like most conventionly anti-rust primers
  • requires a bone dry surface.Practical good results are obtained
    only under workshop conditions.
  • Maximum coating thickness of PRODUCT"WX" is 1-2 mil.
    Requires at least two coats. The first coat has to be sanded.
    90% of extra cost in the coating business comes from the
    necessity to do more than one coating.
  • PRODUCT"WX" is destroyed by sunshine. it always requires
    another UV-resistant top-coat from a different paint material.

Now it is Johnny"Smart"´s turn. He is using EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.

He goes with his helper one day in February when it is not raining,
though you can´t see the sun and it is cold and damp- to the working
site.

He applies by spraying and brushing one single coat of 4 mils
EVERLAST®C.A,R.O.L. In the late evening his work is done.

Johnny"Smart" says goodbye to the plant manager. He will eventually
inspect his work again in the late autumn in case there are any spots
of the steel structure which have been overlooked.

Johnny"Smart" is pleased because his work is done and he can write his
invoice. 16% cost of material, cost of labour 25 %. net profit > 50%.

The plant manager is happy because his plant was shut down only for
one day.

As to the steel structure, it now has a beautiful stainless-steel look.
