Interesting Questions and Answers concerning EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L

Q:What is the competitive
advantage of EVERLAST®
C.A.R.O.L over other rust
prevention methods as to
chemical and physical
structure and its applica-
tion method?
A:EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L is not an ordinary anti-corrosion
paint, but creates on the steel surface an electro-chemical
"composite"layer. Composite means that a amor-plated
structure forms itself within the hardened
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L layer.
This self-laminating armor-platet protection distinguishes
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L from ordinary rust primers.
Further specific characteristics are:
•Superior shock resistance, leading to 6- 8 times
longer service live under industrial conditions.
•Heat resitance up to 320 deg Celsius (650degFahrenheit)
•The primed steel coating contains no toxic lead,
chromates,mercury or cadmium.

cess of a steel structure
with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.
do corners and edges re-
quire a specific handling?
A:EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L is superior to other primers.Because
of its composite structure, our coating is highly workable
and elastic.Even without special corner treatment no
extra reinforcement of corners and edges is generally
necessary. This represents a great time saver.
Q:What is the exact mixing
ratio between the two
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L
components?What kind
of mixture tolerance
tolerance is allowed?
A:3,650 parts by weight of A-component and 1 part by
weight of B-component to be mixed. Maximum tolerance
allowance + / - 2 %. Never mix by judging volume. Not
accurate enough. The A-component must be thoroughly
homogenized with a mechanical stirrer , before smaller
portions could be taken from the pail.Preferably use an
electronic scale with tara correction for these operations.
Note: The factory-filled pails of A-and B components have
exactly the 3,65:1 weight ratio.
Q:Regarding steel
surfacespreviously
primed with
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.:
Does the surface have to
be sanded or can a fresh
layer of
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.
be applied directly?
A: The old surface does not have to be sanded. But has
to be oil-and grease-free and clean and dry.
Q:What does VOC and the
data < 340g/dm3 stand
for?
A:VOC means Volatile Organic Carbon, the amount of
evaporating solvent. On shipyards an other industrial
premises it is mandatory not to use coatings having
more than 340grams/per liter organic solvent.
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L. complies with these restric-
tions and only contains a minor percentage of
evapoarting liquid.
Q: How crucial is residual
moisture present on the
steel surface during
application of
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L
A: The steel surface has to be "hand-dry".Wet or iced
metal tubes have to be dried with a propane torch. The
normal occuring residual moisture on hand-dry but rusty
steel surfaces is tolerable.
Q:To achieve thinner, i.e.
5-20µ coatings: Is it
possible to reduce the viscosity by adding
extra solvent?

ultralow volatiles content.Regulating the viscosity is
done by adjusting the preheater temperature during
airless spray operation.
Q:What kind of tools
(rollers,-foam,-felt ) do
you recommend to achieve
the suggested priming
thickness?With a resulting
smooth surface appearance?
A:Brush (natural bristle), roll (short nap) or spray. No
thinning required. . Use clean short nap Synthetic roller.
New rollersshould be spun vigorously to remove loose fibers.
Any tools used for 2-component coatings can be used. The
cured surface of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L. is micro-
structured to serve as a base for a top coat.
Q:What are the specific
demands when using an
airless-spray tool?And
what type of spray
equipment is needed?
A: The airless spray tool has to be equipped for 2-component
coatings.For airless spray, use a 0.019-0.025" tip.
Adjust pressure as needed. Spray is preferred for appearance
and build.
Q:Which solvents do you
recommend for cleaning
of the tools?
A: Any general brush-cleaners of the solvent- or the
emulsion type can be used. Please make sure that
tools are properly dried before reuse, because water left
in the tools will interfere with EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.´s
proper curing ability.
Q: When renovating a sur-
face, do any remaining
paint residues have to be
removed before applying
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.?
A:Sometimes old lead containing coatings are not allowed
to be blasted off. It is then possible to repair rusty spots
by removing carefully as much lose rust as possiible and
then applying FIX-IT first over the whole area followed
by a thick coat > = 250µ of EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.l.
Q: What is considered a
standard steel surface?
Can polished surfaces
with or without FIX-IT
be coated directly with
EVERLAST®C.a.R.O.L.?

not be totally cured. As a rule of thumb for good over-
coating results :Wait miniumum 3 hours to maximum one
week after the first coat.
Q:Surface treatment:
What should be done
about de-greasing?
Which solvents are
recommended?
A:The metal surface to be coated has to be free of grease and
and oil.Small areas can be cleaned with a solvent-soaked rag.
Larger areas have to be sandblasted or cleaned with a steam-
or water-emulsion type equipment.
Q: Surface treatment:
When can and when it
is mandatory to sandblast
a steel surface?
A: Generally for submerged structures especially in blue
water service. Norm regulations for heavy duty corrosion
protection i.e, German DIN 55 928 have to be obeyed.
Q:Surface treatment:
When can and when
absolutely should
FIX-IT be applied?
A: Any sandblasted or polished steel surface should be primed
with FIX-IT.FIX-IT can be applied to metal sheets covered
with light to medium grade adhering rust. This as a"double
protection".
Q: Which brushes
are recommended
to achieve a streak-
free coating of
EVERLAST®C.A.R.O.L.?
Shall the brush strokes
be done criss-cross
wise or only in one
direction?
